Scarf 1: Ombre

For my first ever crochet scarf, I chose a fun mermaid-vibe color. The pattern consisted of chain stitches and half double crochets and was a single-row repeat, making it SUPER simple to learn and execute.

Prior to making this scarf for myself, I had only purchased one scarf in my adult life. I bought it in probably 2007 (either late in my senior year of high school or early in my freshman year of college). It’s an Old Navy scarf and it has served me very well for many winters. I can only wear one scarf at a time, so why do I need to own more than one?!

But now that I know how to make scarves, I feel like that mindset is going to change fast. 😉

Something I did not do when I started out was to measure it around my own neck. I was following a very simple pattern and so I started and by the time I tried to wrap it around my neck, I realized it was a bit too wide for my liking. And rather than unraveling and starting over, I just kept going.

Something that I’ve learned is that crochet builds pretty quickly. While undoing my work is emotionally hard, it picks back up very easily. I’ve done several projects now and learned that lesson: it’s better to stop, unwind bad work, and redo good work than it is to keep going and have a piece that you’re unhappy with. 💡

I also used an entire skein (which was fine) and then stopped; I failed to realize that I could (and should) attach more yarn of the same color to continue. This one is long enough with the tassels added, but I do wish I had made it a bit longer.
