Holden’s Blanket: Large and In Charge

It took forever, but I finally finished Holden’s blanket!

The Start of The Blanket

After finishing my first granny square blanket for Hudson, I was eager to dive into another one for Holden. The thing I love about granny squares is that I can do one and feel accomplished once one is done. It doesn’t matter that I am going to turn around and do the exact same thing, being able to accomplish something in a relatively short amount of time makes me feel productive.
But the luster of doing a billion granny squares wore off really fast! Especially ones that were going to be 6 rounds. Something I’ve learned is that if a granny square is more than 4 rounds, it’s not for me 😂 4 rounds is the perfect size for me to be able to finish it quickly and then turn around and start another one. The exponential amount of time required to do rounds 5 and 6 just made me kind of hate it…
But there is a type of yarn called Blanket Yarn and it’s soo soft and cuddly! And while I was certain I was over making granny squares for a bit, I did find myself struck by Blanket Fever. So I started a green/cream one that I dubbed would be for Holden.

Crocheting The Blanket

The process of creating this blanket (with no pattern!) was really fun. My first big boo-boo was making it too wide. My foundation chain, at first, seemed like a good width, but as I started working into the stitches, it stretched out (as it’s supposed to) and I realized it was going to be a Large and In Charge blanket.
The blanket ended up being hundreds of rows tall. And it got HEAVY! Towards the end, working a row and then having to turn and flip everything over was seriously a workout in itself.

The saving grace and probably the only reason I’m not STILL working on it was that Hudson went and stayed with my in-laws for a week. I spent multiple evenings sitting on the couch, watching rom-coms (some comfort watches, some new ones) and crocheting for hours!

….and in the end, Holden absolutely loved it.
It was genuinely a labor of love and while I don’t know that I’ll do another row blanket for a while (at least not one of this size), I’m so proud of it!

Materials

Yarn:
Hook: 8mm

🧶
The basic pattern I followed was to chain a bunch (I don’t remember how many) and I did half double crochets into each stitch, repeat that for hundreds of rows. I changed colors in various patterns (2 rows of green, 6 rows of cream, 4 rows of green, 4 rows of cream, 6 rows of cream, 4 rows of cream, etc).
