The Beginning of an Obsession

When I started crocheting, I didn't start with granny squares. I actually started with amigurumi (READ: Crochet reflections). But when I made the decision to learn to make a granny square, I had no idea that it would blossom into an obsession of sorts.

It started with finding a cute blanket pattern. Then I watched several YouTube videos of how to do a basic granny square. And I haven't stopped loving the simplicity and meditative nature of crocheting them since.

The phases of creating the blanket

When I started out, I thought I would only need 48 squares. But as I started completing squares and laying them out, it was clear that the blanket would be far too small. Based on the size of my squares (4 rounds, about 4x4 inches), 48 would make the size of a basic baby blanket. My boy is no longer a baby.
…..and so I ordered more yarn and made more squares.
  • Started: March 26, 2024
  • Finished First 48: April 18, 2024
  • Finished Second 48: May 5, 2024
  • Finished Blanket: May 16, 2024
    • I started assembling some squares in late April, but finished it all on May 16.

Why I Love Granny Squares

For me, granny squares are so comforting to do and it feels good to just veg out, either listen to a podcast or audiobook or turn on Schitts Creek and just go. Normally, if I veg out, I feel unproductive. But if I spend an hour crocheting, I'll have 2 or 3 granny squares done! 🧶
It's satisfying to be able to relax my brain while still using my hands to create something.
